- Introduction • Thomas Alva Edison was born February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. • In Thomas Edison’s lifetime he was married twice . First in 1871, Edison marries Mary Stilwell. Sadly 14 years later Mary passed away . Two years later Edison married Mina Miller. • Thomas Edison had six children , first daughter Marion Estelle Edison, first son Thomas Alva Edison Jr. , second son William Leslie Edison, second daughter Madeline Edison, third son Charles Edison, and a fourth son Theodore Edison.
- Introduction Cont. • Thomas Edison sadly passed away on October 18, 1931 in West Orange, New Jersey . Thomas Edison lived a long life and died at the age of 84.
- Social Contribution Thomas Edison has made a huge impact on society. Thomas Edison is a very smart man who has made a huge contribution to the technology world. Edison has invented things that if had never been invented we wouldn’t be where we are today. Such as Motion pictures, the Battery, the light bulb, and the phonograph. Thomas Edison’s inventions were so great they elected October, 21 to be Edison Day. Edison has never gave up on his inventions. Every time his inventions would fail he would use it as a learning experience. Edison was not afraid or minded failure.
- Childhood As a child Thomas Edison otherwise known as “Al” at the time was very curious. Al got himself into a lot of mischief. Once Al burned down his fathers barn just to see what would happen. He tended to lack common sense. Al had had little schooling do to the fact that his family had little money. Eventually he was homeschooled by his mother. As a child Edison loved to read. He read books on history and other subjects that he received from his fathers library. His favorite book was, A School Compendium of Natural and Experimental Philosophy , by Richard Parker. The book covered physics and astronomy. Perhaps the book inspired him to be an inventor.
- Adolescence As Thomas Edison got older he began to start working. Edison worked at several places as a teenager. At first Edison work for his father in his garden, but soon enough he quit. He later persuaded his mom to work on a train selling newspaper and candy. Edison had a chemical laboratory in the baggage car but it ended up breaking out into a fire. However Edison wasn’t all mischief as a teenager. In 1862 Edison saved a three year old boy who was in the path of a upcoming train! Weirdly enough the three year old boy was the son of the station master. He rewarded Edison by teaching him how to operate the telegraph. Thomas Edison got his first real job as a telegraph operator in a small office in Port Huron . Edison became a highly skilled telegraph operator.
- Adolescence Cont. When Edison got paid he used the money to buy work equipment for the telegraph and books, not clothing. When winter came he didn’t have an overcoat and nearly froze. He always tried to improve his telegraph. This perhaps is the start of his technological career.
- Adulthood Thomas Edison was a very successful businessman. He owned several, working factories and experimented and invented numerous things such as commercial incandescent lamps. Some of the factories are Edison Electric Illuminating Co., Edison General Electric Co., Edison Portland Cement Corp., etc. Edison has received many awards/honors throughout the course of his life. Although Edison has received many awards , the most honorable one to him was the Congressional Medal of Honor for his debt to society. Edison received this medal in a Ceremony at West Orange New Jersey by U.S President Calvin Coolidge.
- Adulthood Cont. By age 80, Edison had horrible health conditions. He started to find a way to make rubber from plants but was cut short do to his death on October 18, 1931. Thomas Edison will be remember as an amazing man with an amazing imagination who changed the technological world forever.
